About Sunderland Logo

Sunderland's badge is a red, white, black and gold crest. It combines red-and-white stripes with images of Penshaw Monument and Wearmouth Bridge, with two lions at the sides. A wheel and a scroll reading Consectatio Excellentiae appear above, and Sunderland A.F.C. is written on the lower banner. The monument and bridge are local landmarks, while the lions come from Sunderland's civic arms. The wheel recalls County Durham's mining history and the former Monkwearmouth Colliery site where the Stadium of Light was built. The Latin motto translates as "In pursuit of excellence".
